Tips for Keeping Your Blog Secure

Separate Users

If you plan to hire several bloggers to write content for your blog, make sure they all have separate user names and passwords. Unless you really trust the writers, do not give them administrative privileges. This can help you avoid unwanted changes to your blog, even if the changes are accidental and not malicious in nature.

Template Safety

There are thousands of colorful templates available for almost every blogging platform. These templates can help you customize the look of your blog and make it stand apart from the millions of other blogs on the Web. Unfortunately, unscrupulous people can insert malicious code into template files. You need to take several steps to protect your blog when downloading templates. Take a look at the code before running it, as you may be able to spot anything that is out of place. If you’re installing a custom template and notice links to adult sites within the code, you’ll know that you shouldn’t use it. Before you implement a piece of template code, check to make sure that there are no ads or pop-ups coded in the text. Always use trusted code sources when downloading templates or widgets. Buying from trusted sources can help you avoid getting burned.

Secret Keys

If you use WordPress, you can add some extra security to your blog. WordPress needs the information in your wp-config.php file to connect to your blog’s database. You can make it difficult for someone to access your blog by using a secret key in this file. Any time you change the secret key, all users will be forced to log in to the admin area again. It also deletes existing cookies, making it more difficult for an unauthorized person to log in to your blog. For additional security tips on WordPress, please see this page.

Perform Regular Backups

In some cases, it is not always possible to protect your blog from every possible security issue. That is why you need to back up your files regularly. Any time you make a change to your template code or add a new blog post, make a backup. Keep the files in a safe location, such as on a flash drive stored in a fireproof box. If something does happen to your blog, you will be able to use the backups to get it up and running again in a short amount of time.
